CTA member named as ‘Local Hero’

Anne Marie Kennedy, CEO of East Renfrewshire Community Transport, was recently named by the Scottish Parliament’s Presiding Officer as his ‘Local Hero’ at the opening ceremony of the Scottish Parliament.

Anne Marie was chosen by Presiding Officer Ken Macintosh in recognition of her work across her local community. She was joined at the event by other Local Heroes from across Scotland, nominated by MSPs in recognition of their important personal contribution to the lives of others.

Along with the other local heroes, Anne Marie took place in the historic Riding procession along Edinburgh’s Royal Mile, which made its way towards Holyrood and the opening of the new parliamentary session.

Presiding Officer Ken Macintosh MSP said: “I know of so many people across East Renfrewshire who have reason to be thankful for the “Wee Red Bus” run by Anne Marie Kennedy and her volunteer drivers.  The service is there for anyone struggling to make an appointment with their GP, hospital or clinic and all on a voluntary basis.  Anne Marie Kennedy is at the heart of her local community and deserves to be right at the heart of Holyrood’s opening ceremony celebrations.”

This is the second time this year that Anne Marie, and East Renfrewshire Community Transport, has received this sort of recognition. In April she was invited along with a number of other CTA members across the UK to attend a reception at Number 10 Downing St to celebrate the role of the transport sector in ‘keeping Britain moving’.

Congratulations from all of us at the CTA to Anne Marie, whose naming as a local hero offers further encouragement that the value of community transport is being recognised at the highest levels.
